Soundtracks can accompany not only movies or television but also video games and books. Some directors are as intrinsically linked to the soundtracks as they are to their films. Star Wars is also known as a Space Opera. The soundtrack to the 1937 Walt Disney animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first commercially issued film soundtrack.

Hans Zimmer: True Romance
Hans Zimmer, one of the most renowned names in film score and has worked on a whole array of classics from The Lion King to Gladiator. Born in Germany in the late 50’s, Hans started scoring in the 1980s, and has since composed music for over 150 films. ‘You’re So Cool’, part of the 1993 soundtrack for romantic crime film classic ‘True Romance’, is a cover of Carl Orff’s ‘Gaussenhauer’. It undoubtedly contributes to the cult following of the Tony Scott directed classic.

Mica Levi: Under the Skin
Mica Levi, known better as Micachu and part of her experimental pop group Micachu and the Shapes steps into soundtrack territory with her first ever score for ‘Under the Skin’. Featuring Scarlett Johansson, the ‘other-wordly’ film has hardly any dialogue, the music and imagery creating the unnerving atmosphere. She won Best Composer at the 2014 European Film Awards, and tied with Jonny Greenwood for Best Music/Score at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Critics Awards. She was also nominated for the 2015 BAFTA Award for Best Film Music.

Kendrick Lamar: Black Panther
‘Black Panther: The Album – Music from and Inspired By’ is the soundtrack album for the Marvel Studios film Black Panther out in February this year. Curated and largely featuring  Kendrick Lamar, it features a variety of collaborators, many who are fellow artists signed to independent label Top Dawg Entertainment. Black Panther is the first movie on this scale directed by, written by, acted by and designed by black talent.
