Making the most of your Mu-so and Mu-so Qb wireless music system

First things first; if you haven’t downloaded the Naim Audio app and installed it on your iOS or Android device, this is a good time to do so. Once the app is installed, open it and select, ‘Add new Mu-so’.

Store favourite iRadio stations

Mu-so and Mu-so Qb both have five favourite internet radio (iRadio) stations saved by default. Touch the iRadio icon on the Mu-so display and each station will select in turn – indicated by one of the top five display segments illuminating. You can easily replace the default iRadio stations with your own five favourites.

Open the Naim Audio app, select the iRadio input and use the browse or search tools to play a station. When the station is playing, touch its ident logo and then touch the star icon to open the favourites menu. The station can then either replace one of the five stations selectable from the Mu-so display, or be saved as one of thirty-five further favourites selectable via the app.  While we’re on the subject of favourite radio stations, some of our favourites are listed in the Naim’s Choice category in the Naim app iRadio browse menu.

Using Mu-so and Mu-so Qb in a multiroom system

If you’re lucky enough to own more than one Mu-so and Mu-so Qb, or you have another Naim streaming product connected to your home network, a Uniti or NDX perhaps, they can both play the same music source – simultaneously and perfectly in sync.

To play audio from one Mu-so to another, select material for playback from either the Spotify®, TIDAL, iRadio, or UPnP™ inputs and touch the app’s multiroom icon (in the bottom right-hand corner of the app display). A menu displaying any other Naim Audio streaming products on your home network will open. Select one by touching its icon and the audio will play through its multiroom input. Group and individual volume control is also provided.

Changing the Mu-so network name

Your Mu-so has a default network name that uses the last four characters of its unique MAC address. The default name can be easily changed however and doing so if you have multiple Mu-so or Naim Audio streaming products connected to your home network, can be really useful.

Open the Naim app settings menu and select ‘Other Settings’. Touch the ‘Room name’ option and simply overwrite the default name.  While you have the Other Settings menu open, see if there are any other ways in which you might want to personalise your app and Mu-so experience.

Selecting room position and loudness settings

You can adjust the sound of your Mu-so or Mu-so Qb to suit both its location in your room and the volume level you like to listen at. If your Mu-so is placed close to a wall its bass may sound a little emphasised. If so, open the app’s ‘Settings’ menu, select the ‘Room Position’ option and choose ‘Less than 25cm’. Similarly, if you often listen to your Mu-so wireless system relatively quietly, it may help to switch on the loudness option in the app’s settings menu. Loudness applies a tone profile that compensates for your ear’s reduced sensitivity to bass and treble when the volume is low.

Naim Audio App

Make your Mu-so as personal as the music it plays.

Playing Spotify® on your Mu-so

If you have a Spotify® Premium subscription you can use the Spotify® Connect feature to play Spotify® music on your Mu-so. Open the Spotify® app on your mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer and find the Spotify® Connect icon. Touching or clicking on the icon whilst your music is playing will display all the Spotify® playback options, and if your Mu-so is connected to the same network, it will be available. Select the Mu-so and it will automatically switch to its Spotify® input and play the music. Perhaps, while you’re browsing Spotify®, open the Naim Audio playlist and have a listen to the music we’ve been playing.

Playing TIDAL on your Mu-so

TIDAL lossless music streaming is fully integrated into the Naim app, so if you have a TIDAL subscription using it on your Mu-so is effortless.  Simply open the app on your iOS or Android device, select the TIDAL input and log in to your TIDAL subscription. You can browse and play the entire TIDAL catalogue directly from the Naim app.  If you don’t have a TIDAL subscription you can even sign-up directly from the app – with a 90 day trial available to every registered Mu-so owner.

Playing music stored on network drives and creating playlists

The UPnP™ input enables your Mu-so or Mu-so Qb to play audio files in a wide variety of formats stored on network disk drives, music servers or desktop computers. Even music in your iTunes library can be played over UPnP™. Selecting the Mu-so UPnP™ input within the Naim app will display a list of available UPnP™ servers that can be browsed and selected from by artist, song, album or playlist. You can just scratch the surface or go deeper to explore information on artists, discographies, biographies reviews, image galleries, similar music and more. Simply click on the ‘Info’ button on the ‘Now Playing’ screen to explore Rovi’s extensive music database.

You can even create new UPnP™ playlists within the app from all the available UPnP™ material. To create a new playlist select a song and touch its dotted ‘More’ icon. An app menu will open providing a variety of playback options including those to add the song to an existing playlist or to create and name a new playlist.

Using your Mu-so for TV Sound

Mu-so has a TosLink optical digital audio input socket located on its underside near the mains socket. The input socket enables a wide variety of audio devices to play through Mu-so, including any TV that has an optical digital audio output. Simply take a digital optical cable from the TV output to the Mu-so input and use either the touch panel or Naim app to select the Mu-so external input. Your TV will now play through your Mu-so. Remember to mute the TV’s internal speakers from its own setup menus.

Changing Mu-so's illumination

The Naim app includes options to dim or brighten the Mu-so logo and display illumination. Open the app ‘Settings’ menu and select ‘Lighting’.
